Fire Escape: 'Three Dos and Don'ts'

In a fire, what’s truly deadly is often not the flames, but the toxic smoke. Knowing the right escape principles can greatly increase your chances of survival.
Three Dos — Remember Three Key Actions:
1. Keep low and cover your mouth and nose: Smoke is lighter than air and tends to gather at the top. When escaping, bend down or crawl, and cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel or clothing to filter toxic smoke. Fold the towel at least eight layers; too much water can actually make it harder to breathe.
2. Follow the walls to find exits: Visibility is very low in heavy smoke. Moving along the walls helps prevent getting lost and lets you find evacuation signs and exit doors. Don’t run randomly toward light — it might be fire, not an exit.
3. Close doors to block fire: After leaving a room, close the door behind you to slow down the spread of fire and smoke, buying more time for escape. If the escape route is blocked by smoke or flames, immediately go back inside, use wet towels or bed sheets to seal door gaps, and prevent smoke from entering.
Three Don’ts — Avoid Three Deadly Mistakes:
1. Don’t be greedy for valuables: Evacuate immediately and don’t go back for money, phones, or other belongings. Golden rescue time is only a few minutes — miss it, and you might not get out.
2. Don’t use elevators: During a fire, elevator shafts act like chimneys, filling quickly with smoke. Elevators can also lose power and trap people. Always use the stairs.
3. Don’t blindly jump out of windows: In high-rise fires, don’t jump out casually — jumping from above the third floor usually results in death or serious injury. The right way is to retreat to a safe room, close doors and windows facing the fire, wave bright clothing at the window for help, or call 119 to give your exact location and wait for rescue.
